Bibliography of the Sources
A precise knowledge of the works sources is an essential prerequisite for a critical complete edition. Therefore, parallel to this edition, printings and manuscripts with Lassus‘ music have been collected and listed in a bibliography.
A detailed description of the prints was developed by
Horst Leuchtmann and Bernhold Schmid, Orlando di Lasso. Seine Werke in zeitgenössischen Drucken 1555–1687, 3 volumes, Kassel etc. 2001.
More than 480 prints are each described in detail, their content is listed citing the reference in the complete edition, the provenance of the texts set to music by Lassus plus a comprehensive bibliography and more. Furthermore, the approximately 1360 works of Lassus are listed in a comprehensive directory including all references in the printed sources. At the same time, this bibliography serves as a catalogue of works, since about 1200 of Lassus’ compositions had been printed in his time; the approximately 160 compositions transmitted only as manuscripts can be found via directory. An excerpt of a review can be found here.
The almost unmanageable number of manuscript transmissions of Lassus’ œvre is documented in a Database linked to online accessible digitized reproductions wherever possible.
